Retinal (retinaldehyde) sits between retinol and prescription tretinoin. It needs one conversion step instead of two, so it acts faster, but it also irritates more. Retinal is for advanced users, not for first-time retinoid users. Avoid it in pregnancy, and wait if your skin is reactive or prone to rosacea. Try it inly if:
You have used retinol at >0.5% for at least three months.
You use it every other night or nightly with no lasting redness, stinging or peeling.
Your skin feels comfortable with a plain moisturiser and sunscreen.
How Does Retinal Work?
Your skin converts retinoids into retinoic acid, the molecule that does the work. Retinal needs one step to get there, while retinol needs two. That is why retinal is closer to the active molecule and tends to act faster, and why it can irritate more than retinol. It helps in following ways:

Avoid all retinoids in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and in teenagers unless a doctor prescribes one.
How to Use Retinal
Start slowly: Use it twice a week at night, then move to every other night after two weeks. Build up to nightly only if your skin stays comfortable.
Apply on clean, dry skin: One pea-size amount covers the whole face.
Buffer if it stings: Put on moisturiser, then the retinal, then moisturiser again.
Wear sunscreen every morning: Retinoids thin the outer layer of skin while they work.
Keep acids and vitamin C apart: Use vitamin C in the morning and the retinal at night.
Know when to stop: Stop if you have redness that lasts into the next morning, stinging when you apply plain moisturiser or water, or flaking around the nose and mouth. Restart less often after a few days of barrier repair.

Only one controlled trial of retinal supports this page.
