Combination skin simply means that different areas of your face behave differently most commonly, it’s an oilier T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) paired with normal or dry cheeks. This requires a face wash that can multitask: it must clear the oil where it collects while leaving the drier areas comfortable.
How to Wash Combination Skin?
Wash 2 times a day: Massage the cleanser in for about a minute, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry.
More time on T zone: Spend more time on cleaning T zone as compared to U zone as shown in this video.
Be careful with AHA/BHA face washes: If using an exfoliating wash (with salicylic, glycolic, or lactic acid), start with just 2 to 3 times a week. Do not use an acid wash if you are already applying an acid serum in the same routine.
Avoid "squeaky" clean: If your skin feels tight or squeaky-clean immediately after rinsing, your face wash is too harsh.

How to Choose a Face Wash for Combination Skin?
Read the cleansing agents first. Look at the first few ingredients listed after water. We group them into three tiers: ultra-mild (e.g., coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside), mild (e.g., cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium cocoyl isethionate), and strong (e.g., sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate). If you have combination skin, always start with ultra-mild or mild agents.
Match the active to the visible problem. For shine and T-zone breakouts, look for salicylic acid. For tight cheeks, prioritize creamy or gel washes with glycerin or ceramides (and skip the acids). For dull skin and clogged pores, introduce a glycolic or lactic acid wash a few times a week.
Be realistic about wash-off actives. A cleanser is rinsed away in about 60 seconds, meaning an acid or niacinamide won't perform as effectively as it would in a leave-on serum. For context, an ingredient supplier paper noted that only about 1% to 2% of the salicylic acid in a wash is actually deposited onto the skin.
Go fragrance-free for sensitive cheeks. If your cheeks regularly sting or feel uncomfortably tight after washing, eliminate fragrance.
Always patch test. Try a new face wash on a small, discrete area for a few days before committing to daily use.
Ingredients to Avoid or Limit
Strong Cleansing Agents: Avoid sulfates (SLS, SLES), olefin sulfonates, and alkaline soap bases. While effective for extremely oily skin, they are too harsh for combination skin and might leave your cheeks feeling tight and stripped.
Fragrance & Essential Oils: These are common triggers for skin allergies and contact dermatitis. Opt for fragrance-free washes, especially if your skin is sensitive.
Benzophenone-4 & Parabens: These controversial ingredients disqualify a product from our Dermatocare Select badge and are best avoided.

Look for a mild, betaine or isethionate-based surfactant with niacinamide or panthenol, rather than a strong foaming cleanser that would over-dry your cheeks to manage the T-zone.
