“Doctor, which face mask is good for oily skin? How to make natural face masks? How to put face mask? How often can I use it?” We, Dermatologists are not trained to answer these questions, however gathering knowledge on natural face mask dawned upon me a realisation on how to make face mask according to skin types.
Face masks or face packs, as the name suggests packs your skin with lots of useful ingredients. In contrast, to moisturisers, prolonged contact time and the larger amount of ingredients in face mask provide an opportunity for the ingredients to seep into the skin deeper and hence, act more efficiently. But this is the very reason; a wrong face pack can cause disastrous results just before the most important day of your life. A face pack can conveniently make or break your date!
How does a face mask work?
Face pack has a base that either absorbs extra oils in the oily skin types or provides hydration to the dry skin types. Suspended in the base are active ingredients that contribute to properties like skin lightening, tightening, soothing, acne control or anti-ageing, etc. So, face pack not only optimises oil secretions but also addresses your key area of concern. Besides this, a temporary firming effect is desirable.
How to make a natural face mask for my skin?
As explained earlier, the face mask has two vital components – base and active ingredients. The choice of the base depends on the oil secretion of your skin, and the choice of active ingredients depends on main skin concern. Unlike homemade face packs, a face pack in the market might contain preservatives, fragrances, binders, colours, etc. I have tabulated below, the choice of base and active ingredients for different skin types:

If you have combination skin type, then look and feel for the skin texture before applying face pack, if it is on the oily side go for drying face packs and if it is dry or normal then go for hydrating ones. Check out the recipes for:

How often can I apply a face mask?
You can apply face pack twice a week. However, to simplify skin care regime, we recommend two-step home facial once in a week. This process consists of scrubbing your face followed by face pack once a week.
When should I avoid using a face mask?
Face pack can actually help in resolving your skin problems if you choose the right ingredients. So you can continue with acne control face pack if you get pimples or soothing and hydrating face pack if your skin is irritated, but avoid scrubbing in such cases. However if you feel irritation, burning or get redness or pimples after applying face pack, it is better to discontinue face pack altogether and visit your Dermatologist. Also, if you are not sure about the ingredients, I recommend you to avoid face pack in case of any redness, breakout, irritation, sunburn or rash on your face.
How to apply the face mask?
There is no scientific evidence behind applying face pack in the upward direction, but I think that this makes sense. You can put dots of face pack on your face and neck, and spread them in the upward direction. The layer of face pack should be thick enough to hide the skin beneath. Whether to cover the under eye area or not, depends on the ingredient. You can put the milder and non-irritating face pack near your eyes. Follow the time limit mentioned on the packing or leave the homemade face pack until it is dry and tight. For rinsing, soften the face pack by splashing the water on your face. Remove the face pack near your eyes with the help of wet cotton first and then wipe off rest of your face gently. Finally, rinse off the residue by splashing water, and pat dry.
