Dermatocare: What are fillers?

Dr. Chytra: Dermal fillers are an injectable substance made from natural materials and have been developed for injection into the skin to restore its youthful appearance. The main type of dermal fillers in the market, are a soft gel consisting of stabilized, non-animal hyaluronic acid. This hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the skin and helps to hydrate and add volume to our skin. It is constantly replaced as we age, when this replacement mechanism diminishes so does the moisturizing and plumping effects of hyaluronic acid. The hyaluronic acid used in the filler is tissue-friendly and closely resembles the hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in the body; it is long lasting but not permanent.

Dermatocare: How they are injected?

Dr. Chytra: The dermal filler is injected into the skin in small amounts using a very fine needle or cannula. The gel provides natural volume to smooth away the appearance of lines and wrinkles, enhance facial shape, or create fuller lips. Dermal fillers improve the elasticity and texture of skin, restoring and maintaining the hydro-balance of skin. The treatment is quick, typically taking about 15-30 minutes.

Dermatocare: Are these injections painful?

Dr. Chytra: The treatment is very comfortable most of the times and pain relief is not necessary. Some people may experience the treatment as a mild discomfort. A local anesthetic cream or spray can be applied to the area for a more comfortable treatment experience. Newer Dermal fillers are also available with the local aesthetic (0.3% Lidocaine), for a more comfortable experience.

Dermatocare: How long does the effect of dermal fillers last?

Dr. Chytra: The result of a single treatment can be seen instantly and typically lasts around 12 - 18 months for facial treatments and around 6 - 8 months for the lips. With dermal fillers, you will achieve a natural-looking result that does not affect facial expression. Remember your face changes over time, and treatments with dermal fillers allow you to control your looks subtly as you age.

Dermatocare: What are the common side effects of taking Fillers?

Dr. Chytra: Product related reactions are rare. There are some injection-related reactions that may occur, however, they typically resolve spontaneously a few days after the procedure. These reactions include redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising or tenderness at the injection site. Like all skin injection procedures, fillers also carry a small risk of infection.

A final note from Dr. Chytra: Dermal Fillers are proven year on year to be one of the safest and most satisfying medical aesthetic procedure around the world. It is most important to have realistic expectations and have the procedure done by trained medical professionals only.
